Current opportunities: I do not have funding to offer new graduate students for research-based degrees (PhD, MS). I do not accept PhD student without providing funding and I will not accept MS students without funding unless you have a compelling explanation as to why you want to complete a self-funded research degree. I am happy to discuss the professional master's of natural resources program (MNR) at any time with the understanding it will be self-funded. I will support the search for teaching assistantship (TA) opportunities on a semester by semester basis as desired and are available. When I have a research assistantship available, I will post it. I recommend contacting me prior to submitting and application to the graduate school. Updated Dec 2023.
PhD in Geospatial Analytics As a faculty fellow in the Center for Geospatial Analytics, I welcome applicants for the PhD in Geospatial Analytics. This program has some funding separate from the graduate advisor so students may be accepted and choose to work with me whether or not I have an external grant. Applications for the program are accepted for fall admission only, the deadline is Feb. 1 annually. Student are admitted by a committee as a cohort. Competitive students will have advance programming and GIS skills, strong record of STEM coursework, and show strong motivation to enter a PhD program. A research based master's degree that has or will result in scientific publication/s is highly recommended. The Geospatial Analtyics PhD Program is a 4+ year program. Please be sure you are ready for such a commitment.
Future students looking ahead Graduate Student Positions Please look over the website to understand a bit more about the research we do. I encourage you to look over the list of publications and read a bit. My home discipline is ecology, I work increasingly across it and ecohydrology. I particularly welcome students with background and interest in these or related fields. Some interest or experience with process based ecosystem models might also make you a good fit for my group. *I will be best able to respond to emails that include: 1. letter of introduction, explanation of their graduate goals and project ideas along with 2. (unofficial) transcript, c. TOEFL (if applicable) scores. It is also helpful if you use the subject line "Graduate Student Inquiry." You do not need to take the GRE.
Students planning ahead for future graduate opportunities at both the MS and PhD level who would like to develop a project for a fellowship application such as NSF are encouraged. Outstanding students that would be competitive for fellowship funding are also encouraged.
Undergraduate research experience While I value undergraduate research experiences, I have limited capacity to mentor students at this time. If you have advanced GIS/programming skills or a strong motivation to do an independent project, I may be able to work with you.
